Ive had 2 phone and one had better service and was more reliable. with the phone i have now i sometimes recieve texts hours after they were sent

I have noticed that on many of the phones that Verizon Wireless there are two lines of bars in the upper left-hand side of the screen. The top line is labeled “EV” and the second line is labeled “1x”. I was told that one of these is the connection for the internet and that the other was service. I would like some clarification on what exactly these two lines of bars actually are, thanks!

For example if someone is calling you and you dont pick up, when they hang up, the phone makes a really loud noise indicating you have a missed call. Is there anyway to get rid of that noise?
