I am going to buy a verizon phone on ebay. I also have another verizon phone that I am currently using. How would I switch over my number to my new phone, and cancel my old phones number?

The act of activating a new phone with an existing number automatically deactivates the old phone, simply because the system only supports one handset to a given mobile number.
Call Verizon Wireless customer service and they’ll get you set up.
